Mori call it Kerer in most of the country but kkupa and kk in some parts of the North Island, particularly in Northland.The New Zealand Pigeon grows to some 51 cm in length and 650 g in weight. The head, throat and wings are generally a shiny green-purple color, but with a bronze tinge to the feathers. The breast is typically white and the bill red with an orange-ish tip. Robyn Forbes has developed a process to protect her paintings in resin, making them ideal for sending overseas as a gift or souvenir.PukekoThe New Zealand Pukeko is a subspecies of the Purple Swamphen native to the Australasian area. Greek translations means `purple black`, though they are more blue than purple.The New Zealand Pukeko is slightly larger than the Australian Swamphen of the same subspecies. The Pukeko is beginning to lose its ability to fly, even now, when threatened it will often walk away from danger rather than fly. When it does fly, it has a rather clumsy take off and landing. It tends to prefer short distances.Often seen alone or in groups of 2 or 3 foraging for food beside the motorway or near roadside ditches, and sometimes even collecting grit. Its natural range is coastal and lowland forest on the North Island, and on the South Island as far south as Okarito (4320S) in the west and Banks Peninsula (435S) in the east..The Nikau grows up to 15 m tall, with a stout green trunk which bears grey-green leaf scars. The trunk is topped by a smooth bulging crownshaft up to 1m long. The fronds are up to 3m long, and the closely-set, sometimes overlapping leaflets are up to 1 m long.
